01 / CBD & HEMP

CBD merchant accounts, without the guesswork.

We match CBD and hemp merchants with processors whose underwriting actually fits the business - the product, the geography, the checkout. Then we walk you through the application, the pricing, the reserve and the contract terms.

Tell us about the business.

A short form. We’ll come back with processors that fit, not a list of everyone who says they support high risk.

We use this to match you. We don’t sell it. Please don’t send card numbers or bank details.

03 / WHY CBD GETS DECLINED

Why CBD gets declined.

Most CBD merchants who get turned down assume the problem is them. It usually isn’t. It’s a mismatch between what the business actually is and what the processor’s underwriting model was built to handle.

Here’s what’s really happening.

CBD sits in a category most banks classify as high-risk. That classification isn’t a judgment on the product - it’s a risk model. The product is federally legal, but state rules differ, and a merchant shipping into the wrong state creates exposure the processor didn’t price for. Card network rules treat CBD and hemp differently from mainstream retail, and those rules change. Chargeback exposure runs higher than in categories with a fixed, repeatable product, because a consumable with a delivery window generates disputes a subscription or a hard good doesn’t.

So the processor isn’t asking “is this legal.” It’s asking “can I underwrite this specific business, in this specific state, with this specific checkout, at a price that covers the risk.” A lot of processors can’t. The ones that can are the ones we work with.

The decline reasons we see most often:

  1. 01
The processor has no CBD policy. They say “high risk” on the website, but their acquiring bank won’t board cannabinoids. The application dies at the bank, not at the processor.
  2. 02
Product mix isn’t documented. No COAs, no lab reports, no label artwork. Underwriting can’t verify what’s being sold, so it declines rather than guess.
  3. 03
Geography. The merchant ships nationwide, including states the processor won’t touch. This is the single most common fixable problem.
  4. 04
Checkout mismatch. An ecommerce CBD business applied to a processor built for card-present retail. Different risk, different pricing, different answer.
  5. 05
Chargeback history. A ratio above the processor’s tolerance, or a history that surfaced during underwriting instead of being disclosed upfront.
  6. 06
The wrong application. The merchant applied directly to a bank or a mainstream processor, got declined or shut down, and now has a decline on record with no explanation attached.

None of these are permanent. Most are a matter of applying to the right place with the right documentation.

04 / UNDERWRITING

What underwriters actually look at.

Six things decide your application. Everything else is noise.

01

Product documentation

COAs, lab reports, label artwork, ingredient lists. Underwriting wants to see that you know exactly what’s in the product and can prove it. Merchants with clean documentation get approved faster and priced lower.

02

Geography

Where you’re incorporated, where you ship, and which states you exclude. Some processors won’t board merchants in restrictive states. Some will board you but restrict your shipping footprint. We ask early because it eliminates processors faster than anything else.

03

Checkout type

Card-present retail, ecommerce, or both. Ecommerce carries more risk because the card isn’t present, so it prices higher and usually carries a reserve. If you run both, you may end up with two accounts.

04

Average ticket and monthly volume

Higher tickets and higher volume mean more exposure per transaction and more exposure per month. Both move your rate. A merchant doing $30k a month at a $45 ticket prices differently from one doing $300k at a $180 ticket.

05

Processing history

Statements from your current or previous processor. Underwriting reads them for chargeback ratio, refund rate, average ticket and volume trend. A clean history is worth real money on your rate.

06

Fulfillment and refund policy

How you ship, how long delivery takes, and how you handle disputes. A clear, published refund policy reduces chargeback risk in underwriting’s model, and that shows up in your pricing.

05 / RATES AND RESERVES

What CBD processing actually costs.

These are the ranges we see across the CBD and hemp merchants we place. Your number depends on the six factors above - treat this as a benchmark to sanity-check a quote against, not a price list.

Ranges reflect what we see in live CBD and hemp placements. Card-present pricing sits at the low end; ecommerce and inhalables sit at the high end.
Product typeTypical rateTypical rolling reserveTypical hold
CBD topicals (card-present retail)2.9% – 4.5%5% – 10%90 – 120 days
CBD topicals (ecommerce)3.5% – 5.0%5% – 15%90 – 180 days
CBD ingestibles (ecommerce)4.0% – 6.0%10% – 20%90 – 180 days
CBD inhalables / vape-adjacent4.5% – 6.5%10% – 20%120 – 180 days
Hemp-derived, documented supply chain3.0% – 5.0%5% – 15%90 – 180 days
High chargeback history (any product)5.0% – 6.5%+15% – 20%180 days

A quote below 2.5% for a CBD business usually means the processor hasn’t underwritten the vertical properly. It will surface later - as a shutdown, a sudden reserve, or a hold on your funds. Ask, too, about the specialty merchant fees that can be passed through to you.

06 / HOW WE MATCH YOU

How we match you.

Four steps. No obligation, no cost, no list of everyone who claims to support high risk.

1

We read the business.

Product type, documentation, geography, checkout, volume, ticket, history. We ask the questions a processor’s underwriting team will ask, so nothing surprises them later.

2

We narrow the field.

We match you against processors whose acquiring bank actually boards your product, in your states, at your volume. Most merchants get two to four real options, not twenty.

3

We walk the application.

We tell you what to submit, in what order, and what underwriting will push back on. This is where most applications stall, and it’s where we add the most value.

4

We stay on the pricing.

Rates, reserves, contract length, termination terms. We tell you what’s normal for the vertical and what isn’t, and we tell you when a processor is a bad fit - even when that means no placement.

07 / AFTER YOU APPLY

What happens after you apply.

  1. 1

    You submit the form.

A short form. We read it and come back with questions, usually the same day.

  2. 2

    We scope the business.

A short conversation about product, geography, checkout and history. Fifteen minutes, not a sales call.

  3. 3

    We send you matched processors.

Two to four options with the reasoning attached - why each one fits, what they’ll likely price you at, and what they’ll ask for.

  4. 4

    You apply.

We prep the documentation with you first. Complete applications get a decision in 3 to 10 business days. The variable is paperwork, not the processor.

  5. 5

    You start processing.

We stay available through onboarding, the first reserve review, and any underwriting follow-up. If something goes sideways in month two, you have someone to call.

08 / GOOD QUESTIONS

CBD merchant account questions.

Why do CBD merchants get declined?

CBD sits in a category most banks classify as high-risk. The reasons are consistent: the product is federally legal but state rules differ, card network rules treat CBD and hemp differently from mainstream retail, and chargeback exposure runs higher than in categories with a fixed, repeatable product. Most declines are not about your business being bad. They are about a processor's underwriting model not fitting your product, your geography or your checkout.

Is a CBD merchant account different from a normal merchant account?

Yes. A CBD merchant account is underwritten by a processor that has an explicit CBD and hemp policy, an approved acquiring bank relationship, and pricing built for the category. A standard retail merchant account will either decline the application or approve it and shut it down once the product mix becomes clear. The difference is not the card rails - it is who is willing to underwrite the risk and at what price.

What rates should a CBD merchant expect?

Most CBD and hemp merchants land between 2.9% and 6.5% per transaction, depending on card mix, average ticket, monthly volume, chargeback history and whether the product is topical, ingestible or inhalable. Ingestibles and inhalables price higher than topicals. A quote below 2.5% for a CBD business is usually a sign the processor has not underwritten the vertical properly.

How much of a rolling reserve will I have to hold?

Typical CBD rolling reserves run 5% to 20% of monthly volume, held for 90 to 180 days. The percentage and the hold period move with your chargeback ratio, average ticket and delivery model. Merchants with clean processing history and documented product compliance usually sit at the lower end. Reserves are negotiable at review, and most processors will release or reduce them after a clean processing period.

How long does approval take?

A complete application usually gets a decision in 3 to 10 business days. The variable is documentation, not the processor. If your COAs, lab reports, label artwork, entity documents and processing history are ready when you apply, you sit at the fast end. If underwriting has to chase paperwork, you sit at the slow end.

Does my state matter?

It does. Some processors will not board merchants in states with restrictive cannabinoid rules, and some will not ship into those states. Your billing address, your shipping footprint and your licensing all feed into the decision. We ask about geography early because it eliminates processors faster than almost any other factor.

What documents will I need?

Expect to provide entity formation documents, an EIN, a government ID for the signer, a bank letter or voided check, a processing statement from your current or previous processor if you have one, product COAs or lab reports, label artwork, and a description of your fulfillment and refund policy. Having these ready is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up approval.

What if I have a high chargeback ratio?

It narrows the field, but it does not close it. Be upfront about your ratio and what caused it. Processors that work with CBD routinely see elevated chargebacks and will price for it. What they will not do is discover it later - a chargeback history that surfaces during underwriting after you described a clean account is the fastest way to a decline.

What does this cost me?

Nothing. We are free to use. We are paid by the processor when a merchant we match gets approved and starts processing. That is why we tell you when a processor is a bad fit - a placement that churns costs us more than a placement we never make.
